Description
The last place you might expect a bluegrass band to begin might very well be a middle school math classroom. But that's where Matthew Rubin, Dave Henderson and Spencer Woodman first met Tim Wells, an old-time fiddler and -at the time- their math teacher. The four played together in different configurations over the years until the pandemic brought them all back to their native Hillsborough. As informal picking developed into a serious group, the Carolina Cutups were born.
Between Wells' old-time fiddle and Rubin's bluegrass banjo emerges a distinct hard-driving sound which draws on North Carolina's diverse traditions of string-band music. Molded after early bluegrass groups like the Shenandoah Cutups, the Carolina Cutups's music could be at home in 1944 as comfortably as it is in 2024.
Tim Wells - fiddle/harmonica/vocals, Matthew Rubin - banjo, Dave Henderson - guitar/vocals, Spencer Woodman - bass/fiddle/vocals.
Produced and recorded by Bill Moore. Mastered by Bill Reynolds.
